🥘 Italian Seasoning Ingredients

All the ingredients in Italian seasoning are commonly found in your spice cabinet. It's just a matter of mixing them together!

  • Basil - 2 tablespoons of dried basil.
  • Oregano - 2 tablespoons of dried oregano.
  • Rosemary - 1 tablespoon of dried rosemary.
  • Parsley - 2 tablespoons of parsley. Use dried parsley flakes, even if you love to garnish with more fresh parsley!
  • Thyme - 1 tablespoon of dried thyme.
  • Red Chili Flakes - 1 tablespoon of red chili flakes. More or less depending on your need for heat. Omit entirely if you are cooking for anyone that prefers mild seasoning.
  • Garlic Powder - 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. If you have garlic powder with parsley in it (Lawry's is one of many brands that do this), you can use it without making any adjustments.
  • Marjoram - 1 teaspoon of marjoram. Most commercial Italian seasonings that you can buy in the store have marjoram as a main ingredient.

🔪 How To Make Italian Seasoning

It may not be more efficient to make Italian seasoning from scratch, but it's worth it if it saves you a trip to the store. There are only 2 steps, and measuring takes the most time!

This recipe will yield slightly more than ½ cup of seasoning, so you can easily store it and save it for when you need it!

  1. Mix. In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients (2 tablespoons each of basil, oregano, and parsley, 1 tablespoon each of rosemary, thyme, and red pepper flakes then 1 teaspoon each of garlic powder and marjoram). Then whisk together until mixed thoroughly.
  2. Season. Once mixed, store your seasoning in the appropriate container for later use, or use it in a recipe right away!

I whipped up this seasoning the other day to make my stuffed Italian sausages and spaghetti bolognese, and both dishes turned out phenomenal! The classic flavors blend perfectly into any Italian dish. Enjoy!

💭 Tips & Notes

  • The longevity of your seasoning blend really depends on how fresh the herbs that you used were. Make sure you are using the freshest spices possible in order to ensure the maximum shelf life.
  • If your spice blend has been stored for a while, give it a good shake before using it!
  • I love the spice contributed by the crushed red pepper flakes. You can easily add some more for a spicier mixture or omit them altogether if your family is not a fan of the heat.

🥡 Storing

Keep your Italian seasoning in a jar or airtight container for up to 6 months. No need to refrigerate, a pantry or cabinet will do.

Your seasoning blend can likely store much longer than 6 months. However, the potency will decrease over time. This will happen at varying rates, depending on when each of your herbs and spices used to make the mix was originally packaged.
