Secretariat still holds the record for the fastest Belmont Stakes run ever (2 minutes and 24 seconds) and the largest margin of victory (31 lengths). At 1.5 miles, the Belmont Stakes is the longest of the big three races. It is rare in any sport to hold a record for twenty years, let alone over fifty years.

Sham (April 9, 1970 – April 3, 1993) was an American thoroughbred race horse and leading three year-old in 1973, who was overshadowed by his more famous peer, Secretariat. Sham was dark bay, almost black in color.

In stud, Secretariat sired such future champions as 1988 Preakness and Belmont winner Risen Star and 1986 Horse of the Year Lady's Secret. But none of his offspring came close to matching the standard he set. He remained a popular figure even after Secretariat Mania subsided. But his life ended tragically.
