Ahhh brioche. The soft, pillowy bread is a true French classic. Brioche is one type of bread that is purely delicious on it's own, but it's also equally amazing topped with ricotta and jam (hint, hint).

Although, I also love when the bread is incorporated into other recipes like this seriously mouthwateringcaramel monkey bread or this delightful French toast. Who knew a basic bread dough could be so versatile?

Today's recipe though breaks brioche down into it's most simple form: a beautiful loaf of fluffy bread.

I can't finish this post without sharing this story, because it's just too good not to share!

2015 was my first time traveling out of the country, and Jacob and I decided to visit France during our adventure. Needless to say I was terrified to try to speak the very little French that I knew to the locals (which was literally "bonjour" and "merci").

One morning we decided to visit one of the cute little French bakeries to see if we could find some good pastries and bread to munch on. I asked the man behind the counter for a piece of brioche, but for some reason he thought I wanted a whole loaf of it. I guess he couldn't understand my Utah accent heh. So he started wrapping up the loaf, it took me a minute to realize what he was doing. I asked him if he could just give me a piece instead, and he was so annoyed with me. Awkward...I guess my limited French didn't work very well with him. Oh well...at least I gave it a good try. I did end up getting my piece of brioche, and then wished I would have just gotten the loaf instead because it was that good!

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 4 cups all purpose flour

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water
