May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Linda Holmes NPR It's a fine film, both as a music documentary and as a family story. Jan 29, 2018 Full Review May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Verne Gay Newsday But what "May It Last" never adequately explores is where that desolation and pain came from. The result is a celebration, without much in the way of revelation. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 29, 2018 Full Review May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers | Rotten Tomatoes (3) John DeFore Hollywood Reporter An excellent blend of musical behind-the-scenes, open-hearted interviews, and performance. Sep 12, 2017 Full Review May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Erik Pedersen Los Angeles Daily News Apatow and Bonfiglio do a fine job creating a portrait that should satisfy fans and serve as an inviting introduction to those who don't know the Avett's classic American music. Apr 4, 2018 Full Review May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Benjamin H. Smith Decider Though it relies on all the typical clichs, in the end it convincingly portrays the band as real people, who care about each other and draw strength from the bonds of friendship and family. Apr 4, 2018 Full Review May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Kurt Loder Reason Online We hear them talk about their lives and their beliefs, which are candidly examined in their music, and are the reason why it has connected with so many people. Audience Member Inspiring, grounding, absolutely perfect. I want to have this documentary on repeat as I am writing music. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Even if you're not a big fan of the Avett Bros, this is a really well made documentary of two pretty humble, wonderfully talented musicians. The studio scenes show what artists these guys truly are and gave me some insight into what producer Rick Rubin is like. The behind the scenes looks at childhood cancer, their family lives, hanging out on the farm, etc. are awesome. Great musicians, well produced by Apatow. I've watched this 4x in the past 10 days. So well done. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member I heard a podcast on the Adam Carolla show with Jim Apatow and checked it out. Also was going to the Inning festival in Tempe Arizona so thought I would study up. The Avett Brothers were one of the bands that seemed like a lull for me at first. I felt like I got to know them more and now looking forward to the concert. The beginning and end were the strong points for me. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/21/18 Full Review Audience Member Really enjoyable. Great to see into the life's of a band you like and see how the process happens. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member These boys never disappoint...never! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member May It Last dives into the depths of the anti-band. The Avett Brothers surprise you. This is not your rockstar lifestyle - these are real people. You meet a band. No. You meet a family - that family is what makes this band. The family has several men and women full of character and compassion. When you play at Madison Square Garden it's hard not to be narcissistic - but this band teaches us not how to be cool, but how to live our lives in a meaningful and compassionate way. So what you find is a compelling tale about self reflection, soul searching, authenticity, life, love and loss. The soul of this film is the impact of living with authenticity. Watch. Learn. Reflect. Be a better person. After experiencing this story and receiving the heartfelt 'sacrifice' of the soul that the Avett Brother's share with us - I feel like a better person.
