Synopsis

RAW and VIOLENT as the book that sold 3,000,000 SIZZLING copies!

Orphan turns bad, finds redemption with some help from boyhood pal. This movie is of interest because of the presence of a young Steve McQueen, the leading man being John Drew Barrymore, father of the more famous Drew, and for being based on a novel by Harold Robbins, famous for steamy writing in his day.

Robert Stevens’ drama in which an orphan raised in the Catholic faith turns to crime and becomes New York’s top boss. Starring John Drew Barrymore, Steve McQueen and Robert Bray.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Harold Robbins (his debut), which was published a decade earlier, the story concerns an orphan brought up in the Catholic faith who finds out he is Jewish, and is punctually barred. Fuming and disappointed, he turns to corruption and it isn’t long before he becomes New York's top manager – but impartiality anticipates.

John Drew Barrymore gives an okay performance in his part as Frankie Kane, the orphan who learns that he is Jewish and then ends up being no good,…

What is begun, must have its end.

A young man, disillusioned and rebellious, turns to crime after rejecting his Jewish heritage and finds himself against his old friend. There is something fairly interesting in the story and there are enough twists and turns to mark it as a proper noir, but the acting and pacing hold it back from becoming great. To put it basically - this movie was boring. It was so damn boring even though it skipped through years with a single line of narration several times. The acting doesn’t stand out, particularly John Drew Barrymore in the lead felt very weak, and McQueen was just a background piece. Could have aided if it had some better pacing and writing.

Never Love a Stranger is an interesting crime movie starring John Drew Barrymore. It's about an orphan's rise to power from Poverty to Crime Syndicate Boss who is an equivalent to Al Capone. What I also didn’t know about this is that it is based on a 40’s novel by Harold Robbins. Robbins also helped produce this movie.

John Drew Barrymore, Steve McQueen and Robert Bray played well. I’ll admit it starts off pretty slow as you get to see these characters interact and I always thought the bond between Barrymore and McQueen’s characters was pretty brief since all they ever did was practice boxing in one scene and that’s it. Plus it does have a bit of conflict of…

This is far better than you'd expect. For not having a ton of money to play with, they did an excellent job with the criminal life story sub-genre - not at the same quality level as Al Capone or Dillinger or any of the great gangster biopic noirs, but still well done.
