Our Favorite Cutout Sugar Cookie Recipe (2024)

It just dawned on me that of all the years I’ve been blogging, I have never shared our absolute favorite recipe for cutout sugar cookies. I think the reason is, I never have an end picture. Either it’s dark by the time we are totally done decorating or we’ve eaten them all already, but for some reason, this recipe has never graced the pages of Dine & Dish.

You are ok if I share the recipe with you without an end picture, right? Will you take my word that this recipe yields sweet, buttery, perfectly soft sugar cookies? Actually, I do have an end shot in this post for Milk and Cookies co*cktail that I created for Simple Bites. Looks good, right?

I can’t take credit for this recipe. Long before I started Dine & Dish, I hung out over at AllRecipes and Recipezaar (now Food.com). This was one of the first cookie recipes I tried from AllRecipes and it is our go-to cutout sugar cookie recipe each holiday season! If you need a solid cut out sugar cookie recipe, you can’t go wrong with the one I’m sharing today. Happy baking!

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies (From AllRecipes)

Nice pictures, Kristen, I’m sure there’s going to be some happy cookie monsters in your home tonight. You’re causing me to have an itch to get in the kitchen and start baking. My favorite sugar cookie recipe is “Mary’s Sugar Cookies” from page 18 in the Betty Crocker Cookie Cookbook – I’ve been using it since I got my first cookie cutters for my 7th birthday. It uses powdered sugar instead of granulated.

FAQs

What is the secret to cut out cookies? ›

Slide parchment onto an unrimmed cookie sheet and chill the dough until very firm, at least 30 minutes, before cutting. Roll remaining dough in same manner and keep in the fridge until you are ready to cut it. Chilled dough cuts more precisely, clings less to cutters, and retains its shape better during baking.

How far in advance can you make cut out cookies? ›

Storage: The cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Make-Ahead: While I love that you can whip up these cookies immediately, you can mix together the dough, divide in half and form into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

How thick should cut out cookies be? ›

With a lightly floured rolling pin, roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use more flour if the dough seems too sticky.

What is the trick to sugar cookies? ›

The very best sugar cookies are soft and tender. → Follow this tip: One of the keys to great sugar cookies is mixing the dry ingredients only until they're just incorporated, and not a second longer. Once the dry ingredients are added, less mixing equals more tender cookies.

Should you refrigerate cut-out cookies before baking? ›

Refrigerating the dough allows the flour to fully hydrate and helps to make the cookie dough firmer. Firm dough prevents the cookies from spreading too much, which is why chilling the dough is a crucial step for cut-out and rolled cookies.

What does baking powder do in cutout cookies? ›

If that supply cuts off before the cookies set, a soft dough will collapse in on itself. If it continues until the end, the air pockets are preserved as the cookie's crumb. Baking powder simply adds carbon dioxide to the equation, providing a more forceful pressure that encourages a dough to spread up and out.

Why do my cut out sugar cookies spread? ›

OverCreaming Butter & Sugar

Y'all are creaming that butter/sugar for FAR too long for cutout cookies. Try creaming your butter for 2 minutes or just until the sides of the mixing bowl are painted with the mixture. That is as long as you need to cream for. Excessive creaming will absolutely lead to cookie spread.

What is the best thickness for sugar cookies? ›

The ideal thickness to roll out your sugar cookie dough is about 1/4"--that way, they'll be tough enough to be handled and decorated, but thin enough to stay a little crunchy.

Can you use store bought cookie dough for cut out cookies? ›

Simple metal cookie cutters can transform store-bought slice-and-bake dough into the most festive holiday dessert. For these Christmas cut-outs, all you need is a 16.5-ounce roll of Pillsbury sugar-cookie dough, some flour, and an oven (elbow grease not included).

How long should I chill sugar cookie dough? ›

Beat sugar and softened butter together in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least 1 hour (or overnight).

Is butter or shortening better for cut out cookies? ›

Which One Should I Use in Cookies? Basically, cookies made with butter spread more and are flatter and crisper if baked long enough. However, they are more flavorful than cookies made with shortening. Cookies made with shortening bake up taller and are more tender, but aren't as flavorful.

Why are my cutout cookies puffy? ›

Q: Why are my cookies so puffy and cakey? Whipping too much air into the dough. That fluffy texture you want in a cake results from beating a lot of air into the room temperature butter and sugar, and it does the same for cookies. So don't overdo it when you're creaming together the butter and sugar.

What is the best way to roll out cut out cookies? ›

Rather than roll dough on a floured surface, roll it between sheets of non-stick parchment or waxed paper. Adding extra flour to the dough while rolling can make cookies tough. And cutout cookies release easily from paper when you move them to the baking sheet, preserving their shape.

How to make cut out cookies keep their shape? ›

To help cookies keep their shape, freeze them! I freeze each batch of cut-out cookies for 5 to 10 minutes before baking. They rise just slightly higher and keep their shape better. This really helps when using an intricate cookie cutter, but I do this even when baking circles.

Why won't my cut-out cookies hold their shape? ›

Too much flour will make your cookies dry and crumbly. Too much sugar and butter can make sugar cookies spread and lose their shape when baked. This one requires a little patience because once you roll out your dough, you are ready to bake. Be patient and bake your cookies when the dough is really cold.

How to keep cut out sugar cookies from spreading? ›

To prevent this make sure the baking sheets are always at least on room temperature. Ideally you want to cut your cookies and then chill them with the baking sheet. that way the tray is still cool when it goes in the oven and the cookies have no time to spread before they are baked through.
