Student detained at Beaufort High School after police say gun found in backpack (3)

BEAUFORT— A 16-year-old Beaufort High School student was detained on school grounds after police discovered a firearm in the student's backpack.

According to the Beaufort Police Department, the school resource officer requested assistance shortly after 9:30 a.m. May 22 for a report of suspect possibly armed with a weapon on school property.

The resource officer detained the student and located a firearm.

The weapon was a handgun, confirmed Master Sgt. Lori Reeves with the Beaufort Police Department.

A police bulletin issued at 9:40 a.m. warned of a large police presence at the high school campus on Lady's Island and advised the public to keep clear of the area. About 10 minutes later, the department issued a follow-up statement indicating that a suspect was in custody, but the police presence at the school was expected to remain.
