BEAUFORT— A 16-year-old Beaufort High School student was detained on school grounds after police discovered a firearm in the student's backpack.
According to the Beaufort Police Department, the school resource officer requested assistance shortly after 9:30 a.m. May 22 for a report of suspect possibly armed with a weapon on school property.
The resource officer detained the student and located a firearm.
The weapon was a handgun, confirmed Master Sgt. Lori Reeves with the Beaufort Police Department.
A police bulletin issued at 9:40 a.m. warned of a large police presence at the high school campus on Lady's Island and advised the public to keep clear of the area. About 10 minutes later, the department issued a follow-up statement indicating that a suspect was in custody, but the police presence at the school was expected to remain.

The student was detained in the school's parking lot, said Candace Bruder, director of communications for the Beaufort County School District.
Bruder told The Post and Courier that the school was placed on lockdown and will remain in that condition until the conclusion of the law enforcement investigation.
The student was being transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
