The film is so bereft of emotion and so full of physical movement that it's possible this is a point that John Hough, the director, and the screenwriters wanted to make. It's a very small point to be made by such a noisy picture.

the final chase is a high-water-mark of stunt-work, well handled by John Hough... Simultaneously sociopathic and patriotic, it’s an anti-establishment drama without the politics, and shows Fonda’s free-wheeling charisma and anti-hero styling at its best.

If the aforementioned attributes aren't up your alley, avoid the movie at all costs. Larry (Peter Fonda) and Deke (Adam Roarke) knock off a grocery store and make off with the proceeds in a souped-up car. Before they know it, Larry's one-night stand from the previous evening, the beautiful but annoying Mary (Susan George), is along for the ride. Fonda and Roarke do their best with an incredibly annoying script that consists primarily of non-stop juvenile insults. George, on the other hand, seems more preoccupied with her dopey and inconsistent Southern accent than actually trying to give a decent performance. To top it off, none of it makes a lick of sense – after pulling off a decent caper, why are the bandits intent on doing everything they can to draw the attention of the police? It all gets a bit tiring after about twenty minutes. I'd never heard of it until today and read that it's one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite movies. I really enjoyed it. I always thought Peter Fonda was a joke of an actor but he does a decent job here. It's about 2 guys who are trying to drive in NASCAR but don't have the money, so they decide to rob a grocery store.
